These are archival documents from the Baghdadi Jewish community. There are also architectural drawing plans, contracts, and correspondence discussing price negotiations. There is a printed booklet notating a teachers’ school service record from 1944. There are collections of receipts from the Administrative Committee for Iraqi Jews, the South British Insurance Company, the Rafidain Insurance Company, various local vendors and taxi services, pharmacies, utilities, as well as rosters of patient information and correspondence from the Ministry of Culture of Iranian Schools in Iraq.

The archival material contains correspondence between different Baghdadi Jewish schools regarding: school matters, student transfers, acceptance forms, school reports, acceptance letters, graduation certificates, medical notification excuses, name changes, student punishment and parent’s requests for their children to repeat classes, pledge for misbehaving, and recommendation letters; photographs of students are included. It includes letters from schools to the Directorate of Education for certificate for ratification, to the Directorate of Missions and Equalization of Diplomas, and to the General Director of Recruitment. Also included is a letter from the Head of the Jewish Lay Council to the Directorate of Education regarding the reorganization of the Jewish schools to conform to the Ministry of Education’s new rules that concerns the students whom have been discharged from Jewish school because their Iraq citizenship has been revoked.

Correspondence Regarding the Midrash Committee and the Midrash Talmud Torah; Correspondence with the British Military Governor

These documents primarily contain correspondence between the Midrash Committee, the Midrash school, Midrash Talmud Torah, and the Jewish Schools Committee in Baghdad. They discuss the monthly salaries of individuals working for the various religious organizations. There is a typed copy of the annual report for the Midrash school, 1945-1946. There are also unrelated documents from the British Military Governor’s Office to the Chief Rabbi from 1917. This correspondence relates to members of the Jewish community being allowed out after curfew (including to summon midwives), and the use of lights after permitted hours for religious celebration; the establishment of a charitable committee for poor relief in each community; and a letter requesting unleavened bread for Jewish prisoners during the Jewish holiday of Passover.
